History
People started representing stars and celestial objects since Paleolithic, more precisely since 16,500 b.C. For instance, in the caves of Lascaux, we can observe some points that refer to the starry sky.
Greeks used to represent the Earth as a cylinder, like a column in the space. The surface on the top was the inhabited part, which was only composed of Europe, part of Asia, Libya and surrounded by the ocean. In this period, the greatest mathematicians and specialists started studying the structure of the Earth and realized it was actually round.
They regarded that an object disappeared the more it was away from the observer. They also observed that some stars weren’t visible in certain areas of the Globe.
Nowadays, it is clear that the Earth is a Globe. Am I right? Actually there still some people who are convinced that the Earth is flat. These people constitute the Flat Earth Society.
The Flat Earth Society
Basically, they believe that Earth is flat. According to them, we are surrounded by a huge wall of ice, which is Antartica. The North Pole is in the middle of this world. The Sun and the Moon are up to our heads, but below an impenetrable layer, which is the atmosphere. They simply rotate and, because of that, they cause a period of light and a period of darkness.
Day and night cycles are “easily” explained on a flat Earth. The sun moves in circles around the North Pole. When it is over our head, it’s day. When it’s not, it’s night. The light of the sun is confined to a limited area and its light acts as a spotlight upon the earth. The apparent effect of the sun rising and setting is usually explained as a perspective effect.
They also say that the huge wall of ice is occupied by soldiers, which is unbelievable.
What about eclipses? Well, I don’t even know how it would work with this model.
And gravity? They believe that the Earth is constantly accelerating up at a rate of 9.8 m/s^2. This constant acceleration causes what you “think” of as gravity.
The evidence of Photographs
They actually do not lend much credibility to photographic evidence. “It is too easily manipulated and altered”. Furthermore, they think that barrel distortion and other quirks of modern cameras cause a picture to distort.
